Geocache Description:

It is after much thought that I have finally placed my Virtual Reward Cache. I decided it would be appropriate to place this cache at a location that offers a great view and that most people would normally not travel too ( I love all the unknown places that geocaching has taken me to). Now I know what you are thinking, a ton of people travel to this location every day, however, most do not make it to the top of this structure. As someone who grew up in the Town of Cheektowaga in the 1980's, I felt a responsibility to take this opportunity to pay homage to a structure that has truly shaped Cheektowaga. I remember when I was attending school at the nearby high school, which you can see from this location, watching helicopter place the air conditioners on the roof. The road that passes to the north of this cache was a dead end that stopped about a 1/4 mile east. That road was aptly named Postal Drive. Apparently commerce won as this road was renamed after the road was extended to Walden Ave. In 1989, the newest shopping mall in Western NY opened, right in the center of Cheektowaga. The mall was built on land owned by the Cheektowaga Central School District. The school district sold the land to the Pyramid Corporation, the owners of the mall. Over the years that followed, the retail strips of Walden Ave and Union Road grew. New stores such as Target and Wal Mart popped up. Vacant land disappeared. A local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, AKA The Leonard Post, which also sat on this land, was rebuilt further down the road. An addition built in 2007 ate up parking space and necessitated the created of the structure this cache sits on. Being atop this structure gives you a great view of Western NY. Many local landmarks can be seen from this vantage point (big blue water tower, ECMC Hospital, the air port tower). If your timing is lucky, you will find yourself right under landing aircraft as they approach the airport. In order to log this cache, you must look to the west and count the number of large power transmission towers that are painted red and white to alert approaching aircraft. Private message me with your answer (please do not put the answer in your log). Also, feel free to share a favorite story about the mall or what the area was like before the mall. And please post pictures of your view! This mall has been a huge part of not only Cheektowaga, but also my life. It has created both job opportunities for me and prosperity for my home town. Thank you Walden Galleria Mall. This Virtual Cache is part of a limited release of Virtuals created between August 24, 2017 and August 24, 2018. Only 4,000 cache owners were given the opportunity to hide a Virtual Cache. Learn more about Virtual Rewards on the Geocaching Blog.
