EL CAMP D'AVIACIÓ ~ HOMENATGE A L'AVI PITU

El Camp d'aviació de Celrà es va construir al final de 1936 i va ser un dels aeròdroms militar més importants a Catalunya durant la Guerra civil espanyola. Hi ha un itinerari senyalitzat al voltant del que va ser el camp d’aviació, on es poden apreciar, encara avui, diversos vestigis, com un búnquer, diversos refugis i la garita de vigilància. La visita d’aquest espai es pot complementar amb un espai museogràfic dedicat al camp d’aviació ubicat al Centre Cívic La Fàbrica, antic complex industrial de la fàbrica Pagans.

La construcció del camp s’inicia al final de 1936. Situat al pla de Celrà, ocupava una extensió d’1.263.945,78 m2. Si bé en un principi tenia com a funció la vigilància de la costa gironina, per defensar-la dels atacs, tant per part de la flota franquista com de l’aviació italiana que tenia les bases a Mallorca, més endavant va arribar a ser la principal base a Catalunya dels bombarders Katiusca, que sortien de Celrà per anar a bombardejar objectius militars del front d’Aragó, l’illa de Mallorca, de manera especial durant la batalla de l’Ebre, i ja més tard objectius a la Catalunya ocupada per les tropes franquistes.

Al final de 1937 es va instal·lar a Celrà (a l’edifici on actualment hi ha el teatre l’Ateneu) un taller per al muntatge dels avions russos Polikarpov I-16 (coneguts com a Mosca), i un cop aquests eren engalzats els traslladaven al camp per fer-hi les proves de vol.

Com que el camp era un objectiu militar important, durant els anys del funcionament va ser objecte de deu bombardeigs.

En l’espai on actualment hi ha una colla de fàbriques els meus besavis hi tenien un camp. Diuen que en un dels deu bombardejos que hi va haver, va caure una bomba en aquest camp que no va acabar d’esclatar. On hi havia la bomba hi van plantar un arbre per marcar que ningú s’havia d’acostar a aquell lloc. L’avi, que era molt petit, era l’encarregat de portar aigua fresca als aviadors amb un petit càntir d’aigua que a l’estiu es conservava dins d’un pou perquè l’aigua no s’escalfés. Aquest amagatall és un homenatge a aquest nen petit que no entenia de guerres i que somiava tenir ales per poder volar.

Celrà’s airfield was one of the most important military airfields in Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. There is a signaled itinerary around it where you can still see different remains like a bunker, shelters and a checkpoint. You can also visit the museographic space situated in the Civic Center “La Fabrica” located in the ancient Pagans factory (in the center of the village).

The airfield, located in Celrà, occupied an extension of 1.263.945,78 m2. Even though at the beginning it was built to watch Girona’s coast to avoid the attacks from the franquist forces and the Italian aviation, that had its bases in Mallorca, it became the main base in Catalunya of the Katiuska bombarders that flew from Celrà to bomb the military objectives in the Aragó front, Mallorca and the objectives in the Ebre battle.

At the end of 1937, they built (in the building that now is the Ataneu theatre) a workshop where the Polikarpov I-16 planes were assembled (known as Mosca because of its sound). They held the flying tests in the airfield. 

This space, now full of factories, was bombed at least 10 different time.  My great grandparents had a field in the middle of it. In one of the attacks, one of the bombs did not explode and they planted a tree to mark that no one had to approach the place.

My grandfather, who was very young at the moment, was in charge of bringing cold water to the pilots in a “cantir” that was hidden in a well during the summer to maintain it fresh. This virtual is a tribute to that little child that did not understand about war and who dreamt he had wings to fly.
