De feitelijke opdrachten voor deze cache volbreng je op deze plek, bij het standbeeld van Jacob Van Artevelde. Om het correcte antwoord te kunnen geven op opdracht 2, ga je eerst even langs bij het historische stadhuis van Gent (Botermarkt).
De 'gilden' (beroepsverenigingen) waren eeuwenlang een belangrijke speler in het politieke en economische leven van Gent. Tot vandaag bepalen hun gildehuizen mee het stadsbeeld. Zo is het Toreken op de Vrijdagsmarkt het gildehuis van de huidevetters; verder staan er gildehuizen in de Cataloniëstraat (gildehuis van de metselaars), aan de Groentenmarkt (Groot Vleeshuis en gildehuis van de visverkopers) en op de Gras- en Korenlei (vrije en onvrije schippers, korenmeters, ...) De stadskerken (voornamelijk Sint-Jacobs en Sint-Niklaas) kregen hun huidige vorm omdat de gilden er hun eigen kapellen inrichtten.
Dat Gentenaar Jacob van Artevelde in 1338 opperhoofdman werd van het revolutionaire bewind van het Graafschap Vlaanderen was mede te danken aan de invloed van de Gentse gilden. Het hoeft dus niet te verwonderen dat de wapens van de gilden verwerkt werden in de sokkel van zijn standbeeld op de Vrijdagsmarkt (door Pieter De Vigne-Quyo in 1863).
Bij het beeld van Jacob Van Artevelde vervul je de opdrachten om deze virtual te loggen.
Opdracht 1: Maak een foto waarop je jouw favoriete gildenwapen aanwijst en stuur die naar de eigenaar van de cache of plaats die in je log. Doe ook een gok welke gilde (welk beroep) dit wapen zou voeren.
Opdracht 2: In het middeleeuwse deel van het Stadhuis vind je deze 2 beelden van knapen die elk het wapen van hun gilde dragen. Stuur de naam van 1 van deze beide gilden in een bericht aan de eigenaar van deze cache, vergezeld van een foto van dit wapen op het voetstuk van het beeld van Artevelde (Doe dit niet in de log, maar in een bericht.)

The actual assignments for this cache are completed at this location, at the statue of Jacob Van Artevelde. To be able to give the correct answer to assignment 2, you should first visit the historical city hall of Ghent (Botermarkt).
The 'guilds' (professional associations) have been an important player in the political and economic life of Ghent for centuries. Until today, their guild houses determine the cityscape. E.g. , the 'Toreken' on the 'Vrijdagsmarkt' is the guildhall of the skin-setters; furthermore there are guild houses in the 'Cataloniëstraat' (guildhall of the bricklayers), at the 'Groentenmarkt' (Great Meat House and guildhall of the fishmongers) and at the 'Graslei' and 'Korenlei' (free and unfree skippers, corn meters, ...) The city churches (mainly Saint James and Saint Nicolas Church) got their actual scape because of the guilds who had their own chapels in there. That Jacob van Artevelde in 1338 became chief of the revolutionary regime of the County of Flanders was partly due to the influence of the Ghent guilds. Therefore it is not surprising that the coat of arms of the guilds were incorporated in the pedestal of his statue on the 'Vrijdagsmarkt' (by Pieter De Vigne-Quyo in 1863).
At the statue of Jacob Van Artevelde, you fulfill the assignments to log this virtual.
Ass. 1: Take a photo on which you point to your favorite guild coat of arms and send this photo to the owner of the cache or place it in your log. Can you guess which guild (which medieval profession) used this weapon?
Ass. 2: At the facade of the medieval part of the Town Hall you will find these 2 statues of boys carrying a guild coat of arms. Send the name of 1 of these 2 guilds in a message to the owner of this cache, accompanied by a photo of this coat of arms on the pedestal of the statue of Artevelde (Do not do this in the log, but in a message.)
