Geocache Description:

The Guild of All Arts, co-founded by Rosa and Spencer Clark in 1932 as a haven for artists and craftsmen, became a cultural sanctuary attracting visitors from around the world.

The Clarks transformed their summer home and estate on the Scarborough Bluffs into a self sufficient co-operative for artists and craftsmen. By the mid 1930’s, people were coming in droves to the Guild to see the operation.

During the early years of WWII, many materials for crafts became unavailable. In 1943 the house provided radio telegraphy training for WRENS, and later, a hospital for war veterans.

The Guild of All Arts did not reopen until 1947. In the post war years, during a building boom the Clarks noticed the loss of significant examples of craftsmanship and irreplaceable artistry. Spencer became involved with preserving Toronto’s architectural heritage. When threatened buildings were demolished, he saved architectural fragments and had them re-erected at the Guild Inn site. When major cities began their transition from classical stone and marble buildings to contemporary styles, Spencer Clark had the foresight to save the important features from over sixty buildings and create Canada's first architectural museum. The Guild came into public hands in 1978 but Spencer Clark continued its operation and further enrichment until December 31, 1983. After decades of disrepair, the City of Toronto entered into an agreement with Dynamic Hospitality & Entertainment Group. The brand new Guild Inn Estate opened in May 2017.
