Geocache Description:

Virtually Guiding

Back in 1907, Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scout movement. A short while after this, wanting 'something for the girls' several hundred girls attended the Crystal Palace rally. Along with his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, Robert Baden-Powell then introduced the 'Girl Guides' in 1910. Following the request from the girls at Crystal Palace Park, Lord Baden-Powell went ahead and founded the movement of the Girl Guides with 6,000 girlts registering in 1910. It is now the UK's largest girl-only youth organisation, and there are also around 10 million girl guide and girl scout members worldwide.

The maze is one of the largest in the country, spanning a diameter of 160 feet. A partnership between Girlguiding, the London Borough of Bromley Council and the London Development Agency was formed in order to develop the project. At the beginning of the project, the Maze was dark, overgrown, dangerous and not a pleasant place to play. The maze was officially re-opened by Chief Guide Liz Burnley along with 40 Brownies and Guides in 2009 as part of the Girlguiding Centenary launch celebration. Bromley Head of Parks and Open Spaces Patrick Phillips, representatives from the LDA, project manager Jo Gibbons, and artists Leo Brook and Tiffany Black all attended the opening as well. The opening times of the park do vary throughout the year, so be sure to check them before your visit.

I have been a Brownie, a Guide and a Ranger, as Crystal Palace was such an important place in the inception of the Guide movement, it seems only fitting that it should be the place of my virtual.

Requirements to Claim Cache

There will be no badges available for completing this cache I'm afraid
but if you can use your orienteering skills to get yourself to the middle the traditional way, rather than using the escape route, I am sure you will feel a greater sense of achievement!

A. Answer the following questions and contact me via the geocaching message service or email findings to happy_fairy1@hotmail.com

1. What is the significance of the Hidden date of this Virtual Reward?
2. In what year was the maze replanted?
3. There are 10 granite monoliths within the maze. As 3 is a special number within Guiding, being the number of parts that make up the promise, represented on the trefoil; can you tell me what 3 of the symbols are?

B. Take a photograph of a self-made sign, that reads "I visited the Crystal Palace Maze Virtual" with the date of your visit, at the centre of the maze. Upload this image when you make your "Found It" claim. Faces do not necessarily need to be in the image if that is not your thing.
Ensure your image is clear as any claims of a find that do not meet these requirements may result in your log being deleted. Therefore, check the pictures before you leave.
