Geocache Description:

(Cache page edited 1/5/2023 as the parks department has rearranged where some of the markers are located on the island. All answers can be found at one site as of late 2022, so there is no longer need to travel to a second waypoint.)

The Battle of Credit Island

The Battle of Credit Island was one of the westernmost and last battles of the War of 1812. Fighting for control of the upper Mississippi. the British allied with local Sauk tribes who wanted to keep "interlopers" from taking their land. Black Hawk led the fight on the Sauk side while future president Zachary Taylor led the American troops. The skirmishes lasted for two days, September 4-5, 1814. The victory was decidedly Sauk/British as they outnumbered the Americans 3:1 and the only fatality (or possibly fatalities) was on the American side.

At the initial coordinates, you will find a large stone marker commemorating this battle. This image is readily available through a Google search, so it's a great place to take a picture (to post with your log if you would like!) and to answer this question:

Question 1. How many large rocks (larger than one foot in diameter) surround this monument?

Question 2. According to the plaque titled "The Battle of Credit Island," how many cannons were transported by canoe?

Question 3. What is different about the date on the small stone marker in comparison to the other two markers on the island?

Please email or message me with the required answers within a reasonable time of posting your log.
