Tombstone Tales

Cachen hedder Tombstone Tales.

Her skildres en protestantisk gudstjeneste. Typen findes kun to steder i Danmark.

Tinglev and Tinglev Church - in short.

Tinglev's early history began just west of the church. Here a settlement has been found from the younger Roman / older Germanic Iron Age (4th to 5th centuries). East of Tinglev was Olmerdiget / Olgerdiget from 3rd century AD. Olmerdiget is a 13 km long defense work consisting of 90,000 oak peaks and a grave in front which depth was 75-200 cm.

Earlier there was a wooden church built on 3 burial mounds. The oldest part of the present church dates back to Valdemar's time (1157 - 1241). According to an old legend, the churches: Bylderup-Ravsted, Tinglev-Bjolderup and Hjordkær-Uge were build 2 by 2 by axe fighting giants.

The altar board is a Lutheran wing altarpiece with predella from last quarter of the 16th century. Here is a protestant service depicted. The type exists only in two places in Denmark.

The crucifix with a lascivious figure from the 1400s, on the young Gothic cross,

from about 1250-75.

Renaissance pulpit, of the so-called West Flensborg type, from the time after 1614.

Mindesten over faldne i “Den store krig”.

Derfor kæmpede mange folk i tysk tjeneste under “Den store krig” (senere 1. verdenskrig).

Memorial stone for the fallen in the Great War
After the battle at Dybbøl in 1864, Denmark lost Sønderjylland / Nordslesvig to Germany. After voting, Sønderjylland became Danish again in 1920. Therefore, many people fought in German service during "The Great War" (later World War I).
The memorial stone contains the names of the 71 fallen from the parish.

Commonwealtgravene
Wargraves
Under 1. verdenskrig havde tyskerne en krigsfangelejr lige udenfor Tinglev. Fangerne udførte arbejde i omegnen.

During WW1 Germany had a prisoners of war camp right outside of Tinglev. The prisoners worked in the area. Diet and lodging were poor. Because of that and their earlier struggles 10 british and 5 russian prisoners died march 10. 1915. One was later struck by lightning. All tombstones are performed according to the British War Excavation Commitment standard.
