Lincoln Castle is located in the heart of Lincoln’s historic Cathedral quarter. Built under the orders of William the Conqueror in 1068, on a site occupied since Roman times. Lincoln Castle has dominated the Lincoln skyline for almost one thousand years.
From 2010 to 2015 Lincoln Castle underwent a major £22m restoration project. The project involved the restoration of the castle's curtain wall and creation of a new 360 degree Medieval Wall Walk, atop the castle's ancient ramparts. Restoration of the Victorian Prison and the building of a new vault to house Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest.
Castle Grounds
Lincoln Castle's grounds are free to enter and explore on non-event days. Perfect for a rest or a picnic in a unique location. Lincoln Crown Court is also housed within the Castle grounds, please note access to the court is for court users only.
Medieval Wall Walk
The Medieval Wall Walk is accessible by a spiral staircase or a lift. Visitors can walk the whole circumference of the walls giving stunning views over Lincoln.
The east section of the medieval wall walk is accessible for wheelchair users between the lift and Cobb Hall. Please note that beyond Cobb Hall there are steps, uneven walkways and narrow sections, which are inaccessible for wheelchair users.
Magna Carta Vault
The Castle is home to the Lincoln's own Magna Carta, one of only four original copies dating back to 1215, as well as the 1217 Charter of the Forest. Lincoln Castle is the only place where you can see the two documents together in the world. Lincoln's Magna Carta takes residence in a subterranean vault within the castle walls.
Victorian Prison
Lincoln Castle's Victorian Prison used the separate system. Keeping prisoners isolated to encourage them to reflect, repent and reform. This can be seen by the single cells and the separate system Chapel. Three floors of restored prison cells over a male and female wing, offer an opportunity to learn about the justice system of Victorian England.

Opening Times & Accessibility
The Virtual cache site is available at all times, if you wish to enter the Castle Walls the opening times are:
•April to September 10am – 5pm (grounds close 5.30pm)
• October to March 10am – 4pm (grounds close 4.30pm)
•Lincoln Castle's Grounds are open every day of the year except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
