O nome Funchal deriva da planta Foeniculum Vulgare, a planta do funcho, essencial na gastronomia e doçaria regional.
A cidade do Funchal é única pela sua diversidade, desde o mar à serra, das frutas às flores e dos bordados aos carros de cestos, tudo isto influenciado pelo seu clima tropical.

Conta a história que na Zona Velha terá nascido a primeira povoação da cidade. É caracterizada pelas suas ruas estreitas de calçada e fachadas de casas antigas e é considerada uma zona histórica de grande valor arquitetónico e patrimonial.
Throughout the 19th century, Madeira Island and, above all, Funchal became one of the main European romantic destinations, with the passage through this island of names such as the Empress of Brazil and her daughter, Princess Maria Amélia, Julio Dinis, Antero de Quental, António Nobre, Olave Bilac and others.
Apparently, it was in the Zona Velha (Old Zone) that the first settlement of the city was born. It is characterized by its narrow cobbled streets, windows dressing of old houses and is considered a historic area of great architectural and heritage value.
O Parque Santa Catarina é um dos locais mais aprazíveis do Funchal, localizado entre a Avenida do Infante e a Avenida Sá Carneiro, onde se tem bonitas panorâmicas sobre a baía do Funchal e quase que 360 graus de visualização sobre toda a sua envolvente até mesmo à Ponta do Garajau.
Inaugurado na década de 60, ocupa hoje uma área de 36 000m2, perfeito para as mais diversas atividades familiares, culturais e artísticas. É composto por diversos caminhos pedonais e uma variedade em fauna e flora.
Santa Catarina Park is one of the most pleasant places in Funchal, located between Infante Avenue and Sá Carneiro Avenue, where you have beautiful views over the bay of Funchal and almost 360 degrees of view on all its surroundings even to the Ponta do Garajau.
Opened in the 60's, it occupies today an area of 36 000m2, perfect for the most diverse family, cultural and artistic activities. It is composed of several pedestrian paths and a variety in fauna and flora.
No parque há a Capela de Santa Catarina datada de 1425, cuja construção foi ordenada por Dona Constança, mulher de João Gonçalves Zarco. Podemos ainda visitar duas estátuas, uma de Cristóvão Colombo e outra do Infante Dom Henrique.
In the park there is the Chapel of Santa Catarina dating from 1425, whose construction was ordered by Dona Constança, wife of João Gonçalves Zarco. You can also visit two statues, one of Cristovão Colombo and another of the Infante Dom Henrique.
Encontra-se dentro do Parque de Santa Catarina e só está acessível nos seguintes horários: Verão (22 de Março a 22 de Setembro) 7h às 21h; Inverno (23 de Setembro a 21 de Março) 7h às 19h.
