Mache ein Foto von Dir oder Deinem GPS-Gerät mit dem berühmten Koblenzer Schängelbrunnen und lade es in Deinen Log. Ihr dürft direkt loggen und müsst mir keine Nachricht senden.

Der Schängel
Der Begriff Schängel stammt aus der 20-jährigen Zugehörigkeit (1794–1814) der Stadt Koblenz zu Frankreich. Gemeint waren damit ursprünglich die von den Franzosen abstammenden Kinder deutscher Mütter. Der gängigste Name war damals Hans oder Johann, was dem französischen Jean entspricht. Die Koblenzer hatten aber Schwierigkeiten, Jean französisch auszusprechen, und in der Mundart der Koblenzer wurde daraus Schang.
Über die Zeit entwickelte sich hieraus schließlich Schängel, eigentlich ein Diminutiv mit der Bedeutung Hänschen. Anfangs galt dies als Schimpfwort, etwa vergleichbar dem deutschen Bankert (Synonym für ein uneheliches Kind). Heute jedoch wird Schängel als Ehrenname verstanden und jeder in Koblenz Geborene darf für sich in Anspruch nehmen, ein Schängel zu sein. Häufig wird sogar liebevoll eine zweite Verkleinerungsendung zum Schängelche angehängt.
Der Schängelbrunnen
Der Schängelbrunnen, ursprünglich auch Schängelchen-Brunnen genannt, ist ein Brunnen in der Altstadt von Koblenz. Er steht seit 1941 im Rathaushof (heute Willi-Hörter-Platz), umringt von Renaissance- und Barockbauten. Mit diesem Brunnen hat man dem Koblenzer Schängel und seinen Streichen ein Denkmal gesetzt, ebenso der Lebensfreude der Koblenzer Bürger. Der Schängelbrunnen ist ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt Koblenz.
Das Schängellied
Die Schängelchen, die Lausbuben von Koblenz, hatten es dem Mundartdichter Josef Cornelius angetan. Ihnen widmete er zum Karneval 1914 sein Gedicht Dat Cowelenzer Schängelche. Der Musikalienhändler und Komponist Carl Wilhelm Kraehmer (1874-1918) schuf im Auftrag der Großen Koblenzer Karnevalsgesellschaft zu dem Text die Melodie. Das fröhliche Lied wurde mit einem Riesenerfolg auf der Sitzung der "Großen" im Februar 1914 im Stadttheater Koblenz uraufgeführt und im Laufe der Jahre zur Hymne der Koblenzer.

The Schaengel
The term "Schaengel" (little Jean) originates in the 20-year occupation of the city of Koblenz by France from 1794-1814, and at the time meant the children of German mothers conceived from the French occupiers. The most common name for these children was "Hans" or "Johann", which corresponds to the French name "Jean". The Koblenzers, however, had difficulties in pronouncing Jean in French, and in the dialect of the Koblenzer it became "Schang".
Over time, the term "Schaengel" developed, a diminutive with the meaning of Hänschen. At first this was regarded as an insult, similar to the German dialectal expression "Bankert" for an illegitimate child. Today, however Schaengel is seen as a title of honor and every child in Koblenz must lay claim to be a Schaengel. Frequently, a second reduction "-che" is affectionately attached to the "Schaengelche".
The Schaengelbrunnen
The Schaengelbrunnen, originally also called Schaengelchen-Brunnen, is a fountain in the old town of Koblenz. It has been standing in the Rathaushof (now Willi-Hörter-Platz) since 1941, surrounded by renaissance and baroque buildings. With this fountain, the Koblenzer Schängel and his shenanigans have been erected a memorial, as well as the joy of life of the Koblenz citizens. The Schängelbrunnen is a landmark of the city of Koblenz.
The Schaengelsong
The dialect poet Josef Cornelius was fond of the "Schaengelchen", the Koblenz scallywags. In 1914 he dedicated his poem "Dat Cowelenzer Schängelche" to the carnival. The music supplies dealer and composer Carl Wilhelm Kraehmer (1874-1918) created the melody on behalf of the Great Koblenz Carnival Society. The joyous song premiered with a giant success at the meeting of the "Greats" in February 1914 in the Theatre of Koblenz and over the years became the anthem of the Koblenz people.
