Meiji Maru was a ship constructed by shipbuilders in the UK for the Japanese government. The ship was designed to maintain and survey lighthouses during the lighthouse construction rush in the early Meiji period. Meiji Maru not only served as a lighthouse tender but also as a royal ship that carried many high officials that played critical roles in modern Japanese history.
1874: Meiji Maru construction completed
1875: Government officials sent on Meiji Maru to settle territorial dispute over Osagawara Islands
1876: Emperor Meiji embarks on voyage from Aomori to Yokohama on Meiji Maru
*In 1941 it was designated as “Marine Memorial Day” to commemorate the day Emperor Meiji safely returned to Yokohama. It became a national holiday, “Marine Day” in 1996.
1887: Exploration voyage to Iwo Jima
1896: Transferred to the Tokyo Nautical School (currently Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)
1923: Provided accomodations for evacuees during the Great Kanto Earthquake
1945: Provided accomodations for evacuees during the Great Tokyo Air Raids
Meiji Maru was designated as Japan’s national Important Cultural Property in 1978 as the only iron ship in existence in Japan. She was the first ship to have been designated as such.
