Geocache Description:

This is the site of "The Muster Grounds" where volunteers gathered in September 1780 before making their way to win a decisive victory that changed the course of the Revolutionary War.

We are the United States of America because of the men that gathered here.

Thomas Jefferson referred to the Battle of King's Mountain as "the joyful annunciation of that turn of the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War." And it started here as the "Overmountain Men" assembled on these grounds before traveling two weeks over the mountains in the snow to defeat the army that had threatened their homes and their families.

Logging Requirements

To claim this virtual, simply:
• Post a photo of yourself (or GPS device) with the rock monument.
--- Face not required in photo ---
--- Photo is required within 3 days of logging ---

These men were not trained soldiers in uniform. They were hunters, farmers, and artisans responding to a direct threat from Patrick Ferguson of the British Army who sent word “If you do not desist your opposition to the British Arms, I shall march this army over the mountains, hang your leaders, and lay waste your country with fire and sword."

Here is a map showing the route of the Overmountain Men. While here, you can view artifacts and will find more information about the historical significance of this site in the nearby Keller Interpretive Center, open daily 8am to 5pm.

You'll find another Virtual Cache known as "Ferguson's Folly" at the battleground in South Carolina.
