Geocache Description:

The Gwinnett Historic Courthouse is an historic government building located at 185 West Crogan Street in Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The original county courthouse burned in 1872. The present day Courthouse was built in 1885. It served as the center of county business for over a century.

As the population of the county grew, the Courthouse could no longer handle all of the county's business. In 1988, Gwinnett County moved the majority of its operations into the new Justice and Administration Building located at 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. The old Courthouse underwent a lengthy three year renovation starting in 1989. It reopened on July 3, 1992 as the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. Today, it serves as a rental venue for weddings, concerts, conferences, and other special events. It is one of the parks maintained by the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Department. On September 18, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

History abounds here! Take your time, walk around, and enjoy. Your goal is to find the answers to the cache questions, and hopefully learn some history of the area that may not have been previously known to you. Please email me the answers that you find at each spot, and not pictures of each spot. You will need to physically visit this location to be able to obtain the needed information. It is suggested when arriving at the posted coordinates, walk to the right (counterclockwise) around the courthouse to obtain your answers.

How to claim your find
1) At the posted coordinates (Southside of the Courthouse), you will find sign #1. When the courthouse was originally constructed, how much total land was purchased and at what cost?
2) As you walk counterclockwise to the next side (Eastern side) of the courthouse, as you look out towards the street, you will see 4 historical markers to the right of the concrete sidewalk. On the third marker from the right: what is the lot # that was purchased by Elisha Winn?
3) Continuing to the Northwest corner, there is a monument paying tribute to a Heavyweight Boxing Champion native to Lawrenceville. What is his name?
4) Continuing to the western side of the building you will see a stone monument surrounded by a fence. A particular side has a listing of 8 names. What is the Sergeant's name listed here?
5) Post a picture of yourself/crew at the posted coordinates with your GPS/phone with the courthouse in the background. Please submit your answers by emailing the cache owner on this page. Do not post your answers in the cache log. But do please post your pictures to the cache log. Thanks, learn, and enjoy!
