Geocache Description:

The Monument-Temple glorifies the name of Santa Luzia (Saint Lucy), the Patron Saint of Sight, to whom in 1882 the Cavalry Captain Luis de Sousa Andrade resorts to, in the former chapel of Santa Luzia, stricken with severe ophthalmia. Healed, he establishes the Confraria (Brotherhood) of Santa Luzia, in order to thank for his recovery.

However, the patron of the Monument is the Sagrado Coração de Jesus (Sacred Heart of Jesus), whose worship goes back to 1743. But it was during the pandemic of pneumonia in 1918 that the city, weeping for its perished loved ones, and scared of this scourge, truly turned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, promising to climb the mount every year in pilgrimage, should the pandemic stop taking lives. When the illness finally stopped killing, the people of Viana honoured their promise and climbed to the top where, since 1904, the temple was being built. This tradition remains until today, and it happens on the Sunday closest to the date of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’s celebrations.

Such pilgrimages occurred since the nineteenth century, but they were sporadic. It was precisely during one of these pious visits, on the celebrations of Nossa Senhora d’Agonia, in 1894, Father Dias Silvares thought of having a statue on the top of the mount, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which would bless the city of Viana do Castelo, the Minho region and the whole nation. The proposal was received with enthusiasm, and immediately the local sculptor Aleixo Queiroz Ribeiro was chosen to execute the work.
