Geocache Description:

Please Note: This cache can not be logged from inside the Brooklands Museum ! Do not attempt this cache from within! The coordinates of the GZ lay just outside of the museum boundary so will no longer count as a find if your log is clearly from within. This has been prompted by cachers attempting to clime the banking, which is designed for cars traveling at 70mph plus not bipeds ! Take good look at your maps to find the footpath,a public right of way that will take you to the GZ and does not require entry to the museum to log. Your photograph should demonstrate that you were outside of Brooklands at the correct coordinates to log.

If you are at the GZ you will find yourself on public land at an historically recognisable point just outside of Brooklands, the worlds first purpose built race circuit completed in 1907. The brainchild of Hugh Locke-King who transformed his entire country estate to test drivers and technology in a new sport. From the cache coordinates it is possible to view the the scale of the grandiose concept. You are at the top of “The Members” thirty feet high parabolic banked curve which allowed cars to travel at speeds in excess of 130 mph whilst taking the curve just below where you stand, sounds easy !

Brooklands was also an Aerodrome where many early aviation events took place and which ultimatly became Vickers aircraft factory. Several of their product can be seen in the distance behind the factory hangers. One aircraft that cant be seen from here because it is too low is Concorde which had various components designed and manufactured on this site.

Hugh Lock-King himself ironically did not drive however Dame Ethel Locke King did and their mutual vision and commitment to Brooklands has probably had an indirect affected on all of our lives.

Other interesting facts: Firsts at Brooklands

First demonstration of powered flight 1909 here

The worlds first flight ticket office was here 1911

Percy Lambert first person in the world to travel over 100 mph in 1913 here

British Grand Prix in 1926 here

Sir Malcolm Campbell built Bluebirds here

Barns Wallace worked at Brooklands

To Log:

1.Include a picture with your log of anything interesting (other than leaves) you spot on the banking and your GPSr or a screen grab at the coordinates.

Mail the CO and do not include in your log entry:

M1. The results of measuring the vertical (from horizontal) angel of the top 6 inches of the running surface of the parabolic curve nearest the “corner”. Note: It is probably not the wiki published 30° !

M2. Name all of the colours (and not one more) on the tails of the Vickers aircraft that can be observed from this location.
