On the North face of the Fox Theater is a giant mural that depicts the history of Hays, Kansas in an incredible piece of artwork. Painted by Dennis Schiel, a local Hays artist, the mural is titled "Historic Icons in Hays' Past." The mural is approximately 35-by-60 feet and includes images of Volga-German farmers, Fort Hays, General Hays, Boot Hill, the buffalo and Fort Hays State University. The "canvas" for the mural is the FOX theater at the intersection of 13th and Main St. in downtown Hays. The Fox theater is a two story Art Deco movie theater clad in blonde brick along Main St. in Hays. The theater was designed by Samuel W. Gihn, Jr. and opened April, 12,1950 with a large screen seating for over 1,000 patrons and a balcony. Over the years, this multi-purpose entertainment facility has been used as a wedding venue, dinner theater, first run movies, company meetings, sporting events, school dances, class & family reunions, and live entertainment.
