Geocache Description:

A hunt for Angels and Demons in the ruins.

The ruined church of St. Mary's is one of my favourite places in Nottinghamshire. According to local legend it is also one of the most haunted... which is why this "Virch Micro" has been placed here on Halloween; the ghostly ghost icon indicating both where you need to go and what you might find there.

Attempt in the dark if you dare...

Note that there is no physical geocache at this location; to claim this as a find you need to complete the tasks listed in bold below and email or message me the answers. There are also some optional tasks shown in pumpkin-orange which detail some of the area's macabre history. These are, well, optional, but it would be nice if finders entered into the "spirit" of things; otherwise I will be "gravely" disappointed...

You might be wondering why so much paranormal activity has been reported at this site over the years. Your task is to try to find out, using all five senses.

Demons (optional)

Go to waypoint #1 and LOOK to the northeast. The Colston Bassett gallows were located roughly in the direction of the electricity pylon between the trees, in the field named "Gallowshill" beyond. Over the centuries there have been rumours of sightings of people with cricked necks wandering in the nearby fields. Stand near (or in) the bath and look carefully in that direction; can you see a parishioner apparition approaching? If so, please ask him for his name, DOD and occupation.

Go to waypoint #2 and TASTE. Cheese has been made in the village by the locals, long before the famous dairy was opened in 1915. Legend has it that "Old Florrie" was returning to the church one night with a heavy, full round of cheese, when she slipped and fell into the stream near this bridge. As she drowned, the cheese gradually dissolved into the water making the surrounding fields extremely rich and fertile. Pick some of the grass and have a quick munch; what type of cheese does it most remind you of?

Go to waypoint #3 and SMELL. In the near distance to the southeast you can see the trees which surround Colston Basset Hall, where the Lords of the Manor have lived for many hundreds of years. In 1483, the then Lord of the Manor Henry Stafford was executed for High Treason against King Richard. In 1521, his grandson Edward followed the same fate. "There's a smell of treason in the air", someone across the pond said recently. But what does it smell of?

Go to waypoint #4 and TOUCH. The 17th century brought the English Civil War to the Vale, with strongholds for both sides nearby. Thomas Hacker from Bunnison Lane was slain in a battle near the village in 1643. Six years later, his brother Francis signed the warrant for the execution of King Charles I by beheading (Colonel Hacker was later hung, drawn and quartered for his troubles). Put your hand gently on the head-shaped stone on the door entrance and channel the former king. If geocaching had been around in his day, what type of cache would his favourite have been?

Go to waypoint #5 and LISTEN. In 1604, the plague hit the village killing 83 people. Since then, several visitors have reported hearing the sound of muffled bells ringing from above and of hymns being sung coming from underground. Try to pick out which of the old favourites they're singing tonight.

Angels (un-optional)

The graveyard around the church has some of the most beautiful and well-preserved headstones I have ever seen. They are worth a visit just for themselves. I counted seven "Vale of Belvoir Angels"; these are stones made from slate from the quarries of Charnwood Forest, and depict either one or two angels with wide, horizontal wings, like this one below:

Locate the Belvoir Angel gravestone for Charles; you'll know you're in the right place when you read his grave and realise that he is surely the original of all Church Micros! Then let me know which playing card could be represented by the headstone three to the left of his?

Finally, take a picture of yourself with your GPS in or near the church, preferably a selfie with one of the spooks you've spotted. Please upload it with your ghostly log. If you want to pretend to be Charles I then headless pics are fine.

While you're at GZ, it's worth admiring the blood-curdling gargoyles on the top of the tower and the selection of human and animal heads slightly lower down. The three information boards also give a good history of the site and its architecture if that's your thing. There are several facilities in the village and a few other nearby caches. But most of all, enjoy this beautiful place*.
