16 december 1944 is een zwarte dag in de Antwerpse oorlogsgeschiedenis.
Iets voor half vier in de namiddag zitten naar schatting 1.100 personen in Cinema Rex op de Keyserlei. Vol spanning genietend van de gloednieuwe western ‘The Plainsman’ met in de hoofdrol Gary Cooper, bij ons beter gekend onder de naam ‘Buffalo Bill’ wanneer er plots een Duitse V2-raket op het bioscoop gebouw inslaat.
De ontploffing doodde 567 personen en nog 289 gewonde personen konden vanonder het puin gered worden.
Ook in de buurt rondom het bioscoopcomplex was de ravage enorm. Ruim 130 omliggende huizen werden beschadigd, alsook Cine Scala, het vroegere hotel Beaulieu en de Koninklijke Vlaamse Opera waar een brand uitbrak in de foyer.
Als je een filmpje meepikt in de UGC, wanneer je er passeert als toerist of je bent op shoppingtrip, denk dan even aan wat er zich hier meer dan 70 jaar geleden heeft afgespeeld.
De enige rechtstreekse verwijzing naar het drama, bijna onzichtbaar, op de grond in de zij-ingang staat een herdenkingsmonument voor de slachtoffers, waar toen de Rex gevestigd was.
Deze tegel kwam er pas in 2009.

In the late afternoon, hundreds of spectators in Cinema Rex on the Keyserlei are thrilled to enjoy the brand new western ‘The Plainsman’ with Gary Cooper as Wild Bill Hickok.
In Belgium he is better known as Buffalo Bill when a German V2-rocket suddenly enters the cinema building.
The explosion killed 567 people and 289 wounded people could be saved by the Allied troops.
Also in the neighborhood of the cinema complex was the damage enormous. Over 130 surrounding houses were damaged, as well as Cine Scala, the former Beaulieu hotel and the Royal Flemish Opera where a fire broke out in the lobby.
If you want to see a movie in the UGC, being on a shopping trip in Antwerp or just passing as a tourist, just think for a minute what happened more than 70 years ago.
In honour for all the victims, almost invisible, on the ground in the side entrance is a memorial placed, where the Rex was located.
This tile did not come until 2009.
