The Pools
The Figure Eight Pools are a spectacular geological feature located on a rock shelf south of Figure Eight Gully near Burning Palms. There are several circular sink-holes in the rock, and a few of them have joined over time to form a figure '8' shape. Two sink-holes in particular have joined to form a very spectacular figure '8' shape in the rock.
Safety FIRST
LOW TIDE, LOW TIDE, LOW TIDE....
At high tide the entire rock ledge is underwater. You can only access Figure 8 Pools when the tide is less than 1m. This is at low tide or perhaps an hour or two each side of low tide depending on the swell. I’ve met many disappointed people trudging back up the track with no hashtag-able photo. Sad but true. Like the Grand Old Duke of York in reverse, they walked right down to the bottom of the hill and walked back up again.
Save yourself the heartache; check the tides before you go. And even if it is low tide, check there are no dangerous surf conditions forecast, like a big swell. If the Bureau of Meteorology (‘BOM’ to the cool kids) says “hazardous surf conditions”, don’t go. You simply won’t see them and could also get into a world of trouble.
How to get there
Figure Eight Pools is located south of Burning Palms Beach in Royal National Park, a 6km return walk from the nearest carpark. To get there:
- Park at Garrawarra Farm and walk east down Burgh Ridge track until it intersects with The Coast track.
- Walk south on The Coast track through the cabin community of Burning Palms.
- Turn off The Coast track at Burning Palms Beach.
- The final leg of the walk involves rock hopping around a coastal headland beginning at the southern end of Burning Palms Beach. The pools are at the tip of the second headland from Burning Palms Beach. Access to this section is only possible at low tide.

Log the Virtual 
In order to log this Virtual you will need to jump in. Thats right, bring your swimmers and get a photo from within the Figure 8 pool. Selfies are prefered, however I know a few shy Geocachers out there, so a photo showing your GPS at GZ will suffice. But remember, you have come all this way, so make the most of it. Post the photo with your log. Any photos prior to this published listing will not be accepted.
