Geocache Description:

The Eternal Flame

The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 launched the United States into World War II. Three years later an obelisk memorial was placed on this site in memory of our comrades who gave their lives for our country.

The abstract bronze-copper sculpture by Bumpei Akaji and landscape architect Frank Haines, was dedicated on October 28, 1974. The idea for The Eternal Flame Memorial originated in 1969 with legislative funding appropriated in 1972. It was commissioned by the Pacific War Memorial Commission, and funded by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts at an estimated cost of $125,000.

The artist Bumpei Akaji was born in Lawai, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 1921. In 1943 he joined the United States Army 100th Battalion of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

Burning endlessly in remembrance of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, The Eternal Flame Memorial stands across the street from the Hawaii State Capitol Building.

The memorial has an inscription that reads:

THIS MEMORIAL IS DEDICATED TO THE MEN AND WOMEN/OF THE STATE OF HAWAII/WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES

To log a find there are 2 choices:
Option 1. Post an original photo with at least part of the memorial in the photo and some other thing to make the photo original. It doesn't have to be your beautiful face, it can be a hat, your keys, sunglasses, anything that makes the photo original. There is a shelf on the back side to place an item in case you decide not to use a selfie. Exapmle:

Option 2. MSG me with the secret word found near the light covers. See Photo. (The word is not "SECRET"):
