Geocache Description:

Micro container hidden in an historic orchard

This cache replaces Mrs. Kelley's New Orchard (GC1APGN), which was a replacement for Mrs. Kelley's Orchard (GCX3R6).

Kelley Park has been San Jose's Central Park for many years (though the Guadalupe River Park is beginning to share that role). Most people in the area know about Kelley Park's more popular features: Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, the Japanese Friendship Garden, and the San Jose Historical Museum. Fewer people know that there is an historic orchard at the south end of the park along Coyote Creek. Kelley Park occupies 156 acres along Coyote Creek south of Senter Road. It used to belong to Mrs. Louise Kelley. She inherited the land from her father, Judge and former San Jose Mayor Lawrence Archer. Judge Archer had a 600-acre estate that included fruit and walnut orchards. While most of the estate has now given way to urban development, a small orchard still survives, though it's unmaintained. Old ranch roads runs through the orchard and serve as trails.

In recent years, the orchard has been converted into a disc golf course. The previous version of this cache ended up being in the middle of the golf course, so it had to be moved to this new location. It's just outside the main part of the golf course, so you hopefully shouldn't have problems with Frisbee-flinging muggles. We'll see.

The easiest way to get to the cache site is to park on Phelan Avenue off Senter Road or in the huge overflow parking lot at the end of the road. The parking lot requires a parking fee, paid at machines. The lot is right behind the Historical Museum. If you happen to be visiting other parts of Kelley Park, follow the park path along Coyote Creek south. After you pass through a gate a little past the Friendship Garden, you enter the orchard. The cache is near the entrance to the parking lot, next to a service road. It's a few dozen yards from the parking entry kiosk. Just north of the parking lot, you can see a huge historic sycamore and some old ranch buildings. You may see some oppotunities to place your own caches. This is a big area and can support several of them.

This cache is a sign-only micro a little bigger than a film can. It has room for very small trading items. It includes a pencil. Watch out for muggles and errant flying discs.  Make sure it's covered and out of sight when you leave it.

Update 1/11/19: The cache was muggled. I replaced it nearby. It's a camo'd pill container with a pencil.

Update 8/15/21: I thought the cache had been muggled, so I prepared a replacement, using a different cache style and attachment method. When I was placing it, I spotted the original in its proper spot. I know it wasn't there when I checked on it. Someone must have removed it and replaced it. That's OK. I kept the replacement cache as a backup or an alternate. If you find a micro that's not round, it's the backup. You can find either one, or for an extra challenge, find both.
Update 6/22/23: The cache moved. The old hint no longer applies. The original is gone. See 6/22/23 owner maintenance note.
