Geocache Description:

Congratulations to go-Purdue and zugzwang for their FTF and notifying me the coordinates were off on this one!

This is part two of a 6 cache series focused on the history of Danville and was created in conjunction with the City of Danville's Historic Preservation Commission. All sites have received permission to place caches.

Please be respectful of these places and CITO if you can.

This cache will bring you to the front of the Fischer Theater.

Built in 1884, it was originally called the Danville Opera House and held its grand opening on Election Day, November 5, 1884. The first movie was shown here on October 26 and 27, 1889 showing the Fitzsimmons-Jeffries fight that took place on June 9th of that year. The name was changed to the Fischer Theater in 1913 after Louis F Fischer purchased the property. Over the years the theater changed hands multiple times finally closing its doors on January 5, 1882. The company who owned the theater at that time took seats, boiler and everything else they could use and sell out of the theatre.

Today, the Vermilion Heritage Foundation is working hard to restore the theater back to its former glory. Right now, two fundraisers are underway to repair the roof and restore the marquee.

You’ll notice the mural of Danville’s famous residents opposite the theater on Harrison Street. Andy Goretski was the artist of this mural, one of about 20 commissioned by the Wall Dogs in 2010.

Danville has been called “home” by many talented people. These six former Danvillians became world-famous in the entertainment industry. The Celebrities of Danville wall looks out over the historic Fischer Theatre where these stars enjoyed great entertainment and provided many hours of entertainment for others.
