Geocache Description:

Like all cities Hull has its fair share of connections to famous people and events. The city has of course highlighted it's links to people such as Amy Johnson and William Wilberforce, but there are many more which have not been as well promoted.

Often times these are small connections that might make interesting facts or conversation starters, like that J. R. R. Tolkien spent some time in and around Hull, or that the LCD TV was invented at Hull University.

Starting with Blaydes shipyard.

It's probably not surprising that with Hull's maratime history ship building was an also important trade in the city. While there have been many ship building companies in Hull we are here for Blaydes Shipyard. Their biggest claim to fame was the collier Bethia built here in 1784. It was eventually sold to the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Bounty.

While the shipyard was at this location the building in front of the cache was built later and served as the second office of the Hull Dock Company. There is a blue plaque on this building mentioning the shipyard and the Bounty.
