No matter which side of the Mason-Dixon line that you view the history of the Civil War from, Jefferson Davis was a prominent figure during that period. Planter, soldier, Congressman, US Senator, Secretary of War and the President of the Confederate States of America. During the 1930s, the United Daughters of the Confederacy pursued a nationwide campaign to create a Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway across the country. Since then, many states have designated a major highway as a Jefferson Davis Highway and have placed monuments along the route. Here in South Carolina, it is US-1.
