Powers Bluff Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

WGA2: Hello,

Recently we were contacted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regarding your cache. It turns out that your cache is inside of the Powers Bluff Maple Woods State Natural Area (SNA). http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/er/sna/sna131.htm

Per the DNR policy http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/other/geocache.html, geocaches are not allowed in State Natural Areas. In the past geocaches were allowed into SNAs if they were placed prior to the DNR prohibiting them or if there were some extenuating circumstances. Unfortunately, the DNR is now insisting that all geocaches inside of SNAs need to be removed regardless of the circumstances.

I would like to thank you for your contribution to geocaching, and for bringing people to this special place. It has been a good run.

At your earliest convenience, please remove this geocache from the SNA.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the e-mail address below.

Thanks,

Geocache Description:

This one is for central Wisconsin geocachers (are there any?). A short hike through an interesting county park to a well hidden cache.

notewin = open("http://www.wi-geocaching.com/alert.shtml", "alert", "toolbar=no,location=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,width=450,height=400") Park at coordinates N 44 31.751, W 90 04.257. (Park here if you can... the park isn’t officially open until May 1. I parked in front of a gate on the entrance road.) There are a number of unmarked trails that begin at the parking area. One of them leads almost directly to the cache. The cache is only about .3 miles from the parking area.

Very easy hike (no steep trails here), but take a look at the hints if you don't want to spend a lot of time searching... there are many good hiding spots in the area. Cache container is a green, .30 caliber ammo can.

Cache contains the usual geocache stuff (including a disposable camera). Featured cache items: a bunch of French coins and a Lost Highway Soundtrack CD.

Although this bluff is quite a bit higher than the surrounding land (and is the highest point in Wood County), the views from the top aren’t that spectacular because of all the trees. But there are many large rock outcroppings, traces of a Native American presence on the bluff (including dance circles and cemeteries), and plenty of wildlife to make the trip worth your time.
