Geocache Description:

It may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma ... which human ingenuity may not ... resolve.
- The Gold Bug

The first in a series of gadget caches dedicated to the poet Edgar Allen Poe.

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 to October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, critic and editor best known for evocative short stories and poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. His imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery and horror gave birth to the modern detective story. Many of Poe’s works, including “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” became literary classics. Some aspects of Poe’s life, like his literature, is shrouded in mystery, and the lines between fact and fiction have been blurred substantially since his death.

"The Gold-Bug" is a short story by Poe published in 1843. The plot follows William Legrand who was bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant Jupiter fears that Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure.

This series of gadget caches is located along the "Little Greenhorn Creek" according to Google Maps, but is actually an unused NID ditch. There is water in the winter, but not in the summer. However, it is a very pleasant trail that does not get much use. The only tricky part is where it crosses Loma Rica Drive, you have to make a slight jog to the right to pick up the bike trail which reconnects to the ditch.

This cache is easy to find, but a bit tricky to open. Poe was fond of puzzles and ciphers and just as in the first part of The Gold Bug, you will have to solve a puzzle to access the cache. There are instructions and some hints if needed with the cache.

Note: There used to be easy access from Greenhorn Road, but now there is construction on the first part of the ditch, so you may have to access it from the Loma Rica Drive side.

There are items to trade and a new Geocache Trackable for the First to Find.

There is also a bag of collectible scarab tokens. You don't need to leave anything to take a token so be sure and get one!

Please return everything as you found it for the next geocacher.

Watch for more Poe caches!
