On the evening of February 7th, 1864, General Sherman's Expedition consisting of two US Army Corps, went into camp around the Town of Brandon, Mississippi about 21 miles west of your location. Revelle sounded about 3am. Winslow's cavalry brigade took the advance, followed by the 17th US Army Corps. The cavalry faned out along the front of the column searching for Confederate cavalry and anything that they could steal to support the army (Sherman had only issued 1/4 rations and was to live off the land on the march from Vicksburg to Meridian and return).
The 17th US Army Corps with Winslow's cavalry brigade in advance, marched 19 miles that day. They were continually engaged by Confederate cavalry the entire 19 miles. The Infantry went into camp at Line Creek (Line Creek Emcampment, GC755F4) about 5pm the afternoon of the 8th of February, 1864 and Winslow's cavalry consolodated, attacked the center of the Confederate line at Morton, were repulsed, and went into camp on Scales' Hill north of where you are standing.
There were about 2,000 cavalry-men plus their supply trains located all over the hill. They would have covered about 50 acreas, more or less,
