Geocache Description:

This is one of the postcode series which originated in Scotland with GC5174A.

It is a 2-stage multi that will take you around Gatley and Cheadle.

This is one of the numbered Post Code series. If you wish to add to the Post Code series please contact fly2live2fly at dragon53lady@yahoo.co.uk for a number.

SK8 includes part of Gatley, Cheadle and pat of Cheadle Hulme. It is about 6 miles south of Manchester and Cheadle has green areas including Gatley Carrs, Abney Hall and Bruntwood park.

Cheadle is a corruption of Chad's Hill. (St Chad) and has a conservation area in the centre of the village. The centre-point of the village is St Mary's church, built in the 16th century, next to the White Hart pub.

In 1290, Gatley was known as Gateclyve, which in Old English means "a place where goats are kept" (wiki)

History:

Burial mounds dating from the iron age provide early evidence of civilisation and the area was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Both Cheadle and Gatley were crossing points of the River Mersey and in 1745 Jacobite troops from Bonnie Prince Charlie's army crossed Gatley Ford and Gatley Carrs on their way to Cheadle and Stockport.. The bulk of the army crossed the Mersey at Cheadle and Stockport. However, having eventually reached Derby, the Jacobite troops were back in Stockport in December on their way back north.

The Cache

To find the cache go to the listed coordinate in Gatley and find the date on the clock tower when the flower displays were donated. This is ABCD. You may be able to see this as you turn right from Church Road into Gatley Road, but it's safer parking and taking a look.

Then go to waypoint 1 (N 53 23.367 W002 12.907) and find the date when Downs Bridge was originally built. This is EFGH

You can park at waypoint 2 (N53 23.337 W002 12.857) for the bridge and the final.

The final location is at N 53° 23.JKL  W 002° 12.MNO where

JKL= ABCD - 1687 and MNO = EFGH - 1114
