Geocache Description:

This cache is located within the Msinsi reserve of Shongweni. It is on the far side of the dam, located in an area most dont know exists. The Aqueduct system that was build in the 1920's was to supply water from the dam to greater Durban area.

Please exercise extreme caution when locating this cache!!! Do not attempt this cache alone!

You will need to enter the Shongweni reserve to find this cache. There are 3 ways to the location of this cache depending on your sense of adventure.... For any option, you will require a head torch with a good life as you will need to walk through to about half way of aqueduct tunnel.

The one way is to go across the dam by boat and then walk a short distance along a footpath to the old overflow spill way, and enter the tunnel that way. From this entrance you need to walk till you are about halfway down the tunnel and start looking for the cache.

Method number two which is to find the opening of the aqueduct tunnel, as per the trail head. Again - exercise caution for this option as there is water in this tunnel and it is slippery! From the entrance walk to about half way and start looking. This is the method and way the cache was planned. The T rating might be higher if there has been more rain, but normally it is a T2.

The third option and the less strenous one would be to make your away around the contour roads that cirlce the dam - they are not open to vehicles so it is recommended that this route be taken by mountain bike rather than by foot, but it can be walked via some of the hiking paths that eventually lead up to the road again. This is the long option.

Be sure to take in the wildlife on whichever option you choose and to make a day of it at the dam...

An entry fee is required into the reserve per person.
