Geocache Description:

Hiking to the top of Great Pond Mountain brings opportunities of beautiful scenic views of lakes, ponds, islands, and bays.

At the coordinates location you should have great views of MDI, Blue Hill, and Craig Pond.

This geocache was planted to celebrate Earth Science Week 2017 and highlights a type of geological feature that you can see on the mountain, chatter marks. These are lunar/half moon shaped gouges in the bedrock which were the result of the glaciers moving over the landscape. The coordinates should take you off the main blue blazed trail just a bit and around a hidden corner. Walking along the barren granite and vegetation (huckleberry and spruce) edge you should come across a fallen dead spruce, guarded by a smaller member of the next generation at its base and roots. There are a couple of large live spruce trees to the right of this fallen dead tree. Tucked under the dead spruce lies the geocache which is a medium sized plastic container. Please only drop and trade out trackables.
