La chiesa
Dai tempi immemorabili esisteva sulle alture di Muggia un centro abitato di notevole importanza dal nome di Castrum Muglæ. Eventi bellici lo distrussero nel 1353 costringendo la popolazione rimasta a scendere sulla costa dove, assieme al nucleo di gente veneta che ivi aveva dato vita al Borgo Lauro, iniziò la formazione della cittadina di Muggia.
Prima del sec. XIV l’influenza religiosa di Castrum Muglæ e della sua chiesa plebanale, officiata fino al 1278 da un Capitolo di canonici e riconosciuta come “insigne” si estendeva all’intero Muggesano. Poi rimase la sola chiesa, che fu sempre circondata da venerazione e che, in secoli recenti, divenne meta di pellegrinaggi e Santuario di devozione mariana. È uno stupendo monumento di arte romanica del sec. XI, sorto sui resti di precedenti luoghi di culto di epoca altomedioevale e forse paleocristiana. Si segnalano i plutei altomedioevali della recinzione presbiterale e i preziosi affreschi del secolo XIV in relazione con quelli dell’absidiola di S. Giusto a Trieste. Recenti scavi attorno alla chiesa hanno riportato alla luce reperti archeologici di grande valore storico.
La parrocchia, di cui la Basilica di S. Maria Assunta è sede, è stata eretta canonicamente il 15 agosto 1982 con territorio escorporato dalla matrice dei Ss. Giovanni e Paolo di Muggia. Ha ottenuto il riconoscimento civile il 15.11.1986.
All'interno si possono notare delle travi di marmo con degli intrecci celtici. Non mi ricordo esattamente la storia, ma questi provengono direttamente dall'Irlanda.
La vista
Dalla balaustra della chiesa, si può godere di una splendida vista su Trieste.
Quando il vecchio parroco, Don Cian, officiava le messe era sempre da questa parte della chiesa mentre il parroco che lo sostituì, don Serafin, lo spostò dall'altro lato della strada con una vista non altrettanto bella sulla Slovenia
Gli scavi
Nell'ultimo decennio vi sono stati diversi scavi. I primi li potete trovare vicino al GZ, mentre per gli altri bisogna attraversare la strada e passare oltre al cancello che si trova davanti all'ingresso della chiesa, qui vi è anche un ponte che attraversa gli antichi muri.
Una curiosità: il muro che viene indicato come costruito nel XV secolo in realtà è stato costruito da mio nonno dopo il 1945 perché su quei terreni si trovava l'orto della mia famiglia. Inoltre, in quello stesso terreno, circa 20 anni fa è stato seppellito uno dei cani di mia nonna, Gin.

The church
From time immemorial there was a town of considerable importance on the heights of Muggia, named Castrum Muglæ. War events destroyed it in 1353 forcing the remaining population to descend to the coast where, together with the nucleus of Venetian people who had created the Borgo Lauro there, the formation of the town of Muggia began.
Before the century XIV the religious influence of Castrum Muglæ and its plebanal church, officiated until 1278 by a Chapter of canons and recognized as "outstanding" extended to the entire Muggesano. Then only the church remained, which was always surrounded by veneration and which, in recent centuries, became a destination for pilgrims and a sanctuary of Marian devotion. It is a beautiful monument of Romanesque art of the century. XI, built on the remains of previous places of worship from the early medieval and perhaps early Christian periods. Worthy of note are the early medieval parapets of the presbyteral enclosure and the precious 14th century frescoes in connection with those of the small apse of S. Giusto in Trieste. Recent excavations around the church have brought to light archaeological finds of great historical value.
The parish church, of which the Basilica of S. Maria Assunta is the seat, was canonically erected on August 15, 1982 with a territory separated from the matrix of Ss. Giovanni and Paolo di Muggia. He received civil recognition on 11/15/1986.
Inside you can see marble beams with Celtic weaves. I don't remember the story exactly, but these come directly from Ireland.
The sight
From the balustrade of the church, you can enjoy a splendid view of Trieste.
When the old parish priest, Don Cian, officiated the masses he was always on this side of the church while the parish priest who replaced him, Don Serafin, moved him to the other side of the street with a view not so beautiful on Slovenia
The excavations
In the last decade there have been several excavations. The first ones you can find them near the GZ, while for the others you have to cross the road and go past the gate that is in front of the entrance of the church, here there is also a bridge that crosses the ancient walls.
A curiosity: the wall that is shown as built in the fifteenth century was actually built by my grandfather after 1945 because on that land was the garden of my family. Also, in that same land, about 20 years ago, one of my grandmother's dogs was buried, Gin.
