Fino alla metà del XIX secolo, sull'attuale confine tra le provincie di Lucca e Pisa, esisteva il lago più grande della Toscana, chiamto di Sesto o di Bientina. L'emissario del lago era il Canale Imperiale, che portava le acque del lago fino all'Arno all'altezza di San Giovanni alla Vena attraverso le Cateratte Ximeniane. Intorno al 1850, con l'obiettivo di migliorare la salubrità dell'aria in queste zone paludose, il Granduca Leopoldo II ordinò il prosciugamento del lago di Bientina. C'era però un problema apparentemente insormontabile: il livello dell'alveo del lago era più basso del livello dell'Arno, per cui non si poteva drenarne le acque in modo efficiente. La soluzione la propose l'ingegnere Alessandro Manetti, con la costruzione della Botte, un condotto sotterraneo lungo 255 metri che permettesse di attraversare l'Arno e portare le acque del lago di Sesto in mare, poco a nord del porto di Livorno. I lavori durarono dal 1854 al 1859, con una spesa totale di 3.418.138 di lire toscane, e cambiò per sempre la geografia di questa zona.
Recatevi alle coordinate N 43° 41.100 E 010° 35.088. Vi trovate davanti a una porta di legno che permette l'accesso all'interno della Botte. Su entrambi i lati della porta ci sono scritti dei numeri. A=numero scritto in rosso B=numero di file di tegole sul lato ovest del tetto (senza contare gli angoli).
Girate intorno alla Botte fino alle coordinate N 43° 41.110 E 010° 35.106. Qui potete ammirare da vicino l'edificio della Botte. Concentratevi sulla lapide posta sulla facciata, che a causa delle vicissitudini storiche fu posta molti anni dopo il completamento dell'opera. C=giorno del mese in cui è stata posta la lapide D=anni passati tra il completamento dell'opera e la posta della lapide E=numero di righe del testo della lapide F=numero totale di lettere "I" G=numero totale di lettere "N".
A questo punto non resta che fare due conti per ottenere le coordinate finali:

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, on the current border between the provinces of Lucca and Pisa, there was the largest lake in Tuscany called Sesto or Bientina. The emissary of the lake was the Imperial Canal, which carried the waters of the lake up to the Arno at San Giovanni alla Vena through the Cateratte Ximeniane. Around 1850, with the aim of improving the healthiness of the air in these marshy areas, Grand Duke Leopold II ordered the drainage of Lake Bientina. There was, however, an apparently insurmountable problem: the level of the lake was lower than the level of the Arno, so it was not possible to drain the waters efficiently. The solution was proposed by engineer Alessandro Manetti, with the construction of the Botte, an underground duct of 255 meters that allowed to cross the Arno and bring the waters of Lake Sesto to the sea, just north of the port of Livorno. The works lasted from 1854 to 1859, with a total expense of 3,418,138 Tuscan liras, and changed forever the geography of this area.
Go to coordinates N 43° 41.100 E 010° 35.088. You are standing in front of a wooden door that allows access inside the Botte. On both sides of the door there are numbers written. A = number written in red B = number of rows of tiles on the west side of the roof (without counting the corners).
Turn around the Botte to the coordinates N 43° 41.110 E 010° 35.106. Here you can admire the Botte building. Focus on the plaque on the façade, which was placed there many years after the completion of the work due to the historical vicissitudes. C = day of the month in which the plaque was placed D = years passed between the completion of the work and the placing of the plaque E = number of lines of the text of the plaque F = total number of letters "I" G = total number of letters "N".
