Soap Box Derby originally started in 1934, the sport came to in Salem in 1952. The hill was designed as a track modeled after the national track in Akron, Ohio. In the beginning, friends, families and neighbors alike filled Bush park to cheer on their favorite racer. Families still come from all over the west to race on this track, building friendships that last a lifetime. Seven world champions have come from the Salem area!
You can even still catch a Soap Box Derby race every once in a while between spring and fall.
The cache is not directly on the track so as not to disturb any of the mechanisms, but it is in the place where the derby cars park to start their race.
