Safe water transportation is vital to California because Californians use our river water for many purposes, including agriculture, household needs, recreation and storm water management. The Sacramento River is the largest river in California and it is 400 miles long. It provides water to 19 counties and is protected by over 1,600 miles of levees.

Household needs/Urban Useage
The central valley watershed, which includes the Sacramento river, the San Joaquin river, and the Tulare lake region, is the largest in California, and drains over ⅓ of the state. The snowpack in the Sierra Nevadas is the main source of water in the central valley watershed. Residents in Sacramento get 85% of drinking water from area rivers. Water intake facilities pump water from the rivers to water treatment plants. After water is treated, it flows into reservoirs for future use. The Freeport Intake facility (shaped like a fish) can pump 85 million gallons of water per day. The Sacramento Water Intake facility can pump 160 million gallons per day.
This Cache is part of a project done by the Matsuyama elementary school's robotics team to bring attention to how water is used and transported through out state.  They hope not only to educate the public but by getting people out on levees, problems are discovered and fixed earlier.
