A quick cache and dash on Yanley Lane.
The site of this cache so the old Ordnance Survey Maps say is on part of the Old Wansdyke built around c 577AD. The area is full of history. There has been lots of pre historic artifacts and a horde of Roman coins found in the area. Long Ashton is mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The Manor house of Ashton Philips dates back to 1265. The Manor was divided in the 14th centry and Richard Ameryk a rich Bristol Merchant began to perchase shares to the estate and in 1502 he aquired the final portion of the Manor. He was one of the two Customs officers of the Port of Bristol and he paid John Cabot the Venetian explorer the £20 a year that King Henry VII granted him after he discovered North America in 1497. Local tradition claims that John Cabot named the new land America as a compliment to Richard Ameryk. John Smyth another rich Bristol merchant bought the Manor in 1545 and the Smyths were the principal landowners for the next four centries until 1946 and the sale of the estates. Yanley Lane sits to the west of the old Bedminster coalfields that were mined up until 1924. The cache is a small tin with a log and a few small swaps. Please bring your own pen/cil and make sure it is replaced where found. Please take care with children in the layby as it is on a narrow lane that can be quite busy at times. Happy Hunting!
Congratulations to Lord and Lady R for the FTF
