The RH-53D Sea Stallion was part of a
Helicopter Mine Countermeasures
Naval Air Reserve unit based at Norfolk Naval Air Station.
JUNE 19, 1992
Seven sailors, Two Officers and Five Crewmembers
Died when their Navy Reserve helicopter
Exploded and crashed into the Lynnhaven River.
The helicopter had refueled at Oceana Naval Air Station
and had taken off five minutes before it crashed.
In 1994 the Navy blamed a flawed part in a helicopter rotor-blade motor.
