CNY Falls #3 (Three Falls) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kai Team: It is private property (owned by a development company) but widely used for hiking and, as you point out, geocaching. Someone who lives on Route 173 appears to have taken it upon themselves to prevent anyone from parking along the State highway or walking on the property. I seriously doubt they are a friend of the owner (which is a development company, not a person) - just a busybody.

The property to the east of the bridge/stream on 173 is posted. The property to the west of the bridge/stream is not, which is why the cache description says to enter on the west side of the stream. That said, the busybody has put logs in the parking pull off (which is on public property - i.e. the highway right of way) to prevent people from parking there, and if they are now calling the police, we don't want anyone to get into a confrontation with the busybody or hassle with law enforcement. Although this cache also can be reached from a trail that starts on Glencliffe Road (which has a large parking area), it seems like it is best to archive it. Too bad, since it is one of the oldest caches in the county.

Geocache Description:

These hidden falls hold surprising charm amid rugged terrain – this cache is placed between two converging streams near the top of side-by-side waterfalls. To reach the cache, you’ll have to take a short hike down a 14% grade in an area with steep cliffs nearby. Experienced adult hikers should be able to reach it without difficulty, but it’s not recommended for children.

If you plot this spot on a topographical map, you'll see it's placed next to a stream that begins where things are sweet. Don't try to enter there. Enter instead by following the west bank of the neighboring stream downhill.

There's a place to park near where this neighboring stream passes under Route 173. You’ll pass several small, pretty falls as you follow this stream towards the cache. When you get close to the final falls in the stream that crosses Route 173, it's time to cut over to the one you're looking for. When this stream gets to its final drop, you're there - no need to venture into the watercourse. If you get to the top of the waterfalls and you still have a distance to go, you're at the wrong waterfalls. There's no need to climb down the cliff to find this one!

Note: We adopted this cache from Bob and Laura on 9 November 2004 and on 11 November 2004 we replaced the old cache with a new, restocked container and placed it in a drier location a few feet from the original spot. TinyMoon & The Pumpkin King were the "FTF" the relocated cache, on 1/1/05!
