Geocache Description:

This is a small cache to highlight both the waterbirds nursery and the Stanley Bignell track. First in a song title series., It has room for small trackables or swag and is geokid friendly.

The small camo container is off one side of the Stanley Bignell track. It highlights the nursery reeds used by the resident ducks and rails in breeding season and by a heron i am told is resident year round.

The path commemorates Stanley Bignell who was largely responsible for Wentworth Falls Lake becoming such a feature loved by residents and visitors alike. A Flying Officer in WW2 he was taken prisoner of war. Moving to Hazelbrook in 1956 he was a tireless community pioneer working with Blue Mountains City Council to introduce a number of sporting opportunities for youth of the Mountains. As a Maual Arts Teacher at Katoomba High School he taught boat building and founded the Blue Mountains Sailing Club at Wentworth Falls Lake, providing opportunity for teenagers to participate in this sport. This included construction, sailing and water safety. He also worked with Council to have this lake developed to facilitate its use as a recreataional lake. The area has since had massive upgrades. This path has many memories for me as for many years a friend and i used to walk it at least weekly.

The path is used a lot by dog walkers so take care and study the lake etc as they pass although residents with dogs will often stop and chat. If you'd like a longer walk you can also access from the park side of the lake as well as the shorter one from Waratah Street. It can form part of a walk right around the lake from the park but it's 2.5 km to the lake from the sign at Waratah Street.
