Geocache Description:

Cemetery Art

This cache is not a park and grab. It cannot be solved online. You need to go to Springwood Cemetery where it may take you a couple of hours to complete. The coordinates will take you to the entrance of the cemetery. You will find parking and toilets within the cemetery grounds.

To find this cache you will need to identify specific graves based upon images that appear upon them, or sculptures at the grave site. The images you need are below. All art represented by these images appears only once in the cemetery with the exception of the 'Shooting Star', which appears twice. Use the information from the grave which features the 'Shooting Star' on black marble.

Once you have found each grave, you will need to complete information on a worksheet I have provided to calculate the final coordinates. Detailed instructions and examples can be found on the worksheet.

I would not recommend attempting this cache to those who:

* are trying to find many caches in a day;
* do not have time to walk about the cemetery;
* might feel frustrated by the difficulty of finding some of the waypoints.

I have given this cache a higher difficulty rating because you may need to visit the cemetery more than once in order to find all the waypoints and complete the calculations.

I recommend:

* you wear enclosed walking shoes. Some parts of the cemetery are rocky. Some parts have longer grass;
* you carry water, especially during hot Summer days;
* wear a hat. Much of the cemetery is exposed to the sun;
* take a camera or a phone to record information;
* remember to take the worksheet and other means to make notes.

It will be difficult to find some of the images. Some are small, others larger. There is no right way to approach this cache except to say do not attempt it if you do not have time.

Some suggestions for finding the cemetery art:

* Some cache owners, for some reason, frown at the thought of people completing caches in groups. However, I think it would be a good strategy to come in a group and organise the search on a systematic basis;
* or you may wish to come alone and spend a couple of hours in the cemetery to complete your calculations in one visit;
* or you may wish to make this cache a long term project.

It's up to you. Use your own intuition, logic or methology to find what you need.

Remember respect while in the cemetery...

Before you begin to explore the cemetery, please remember to be respectful. There is nothing wrong with wandering a cemetery looking at graves. But do not yell (for instance, "I FOUND ONE!!!") or disturb other visitors.

If you are asked what you are doing, please explain what you are doing without being evasive.

There is no need to walk on any graves.

The cache is not in the cemetery. It is in another location in Springwood.

How to find this cache

To find this geocache you will need to find a set of 14 graves scattered about the cemetery. You will first need a copy of the images taken from these graves and worksheet to do this (See below). You need to find each image or sculpture on graves around the cemetery. The worksheet has instructions on how to calculate the coordinates for the cache based on the information you will find at these graves.

I have chosen these graves because they each have a permanent art work, either on the headstone or as a sculpture, on the grave, as part of their tribute to the deceased. I have mostly avoided religious iconography because I am interested in secular images on the graves. Each piece of art reveals something about the deceased, chosen by their loved ones to represent an essential quality or association they made with that person. I think their choices are more personal and touching as tributes than standard religious art.

The Images and Worksheet: The images you need are displayed below. You can also access individual images by clicking on the photograph links lower down this page, as well as a copy of the two page worksheet as JPEG images from that list. Alternatively, you may wish to download all the images and worksheet as a single PDF file using the link below. However, if you do this I am required by GroundSpeak to give you the following warning:

Warning: You are about to download a file that contains further details needed to find this geocache. As the cache owner, I represent that these files are safe to download although they have not been checked by Groundspeak or by the reviewer for possible malicious content. Download these files at your own risk.
