Geocache Description:

Easy, kid friendly cache, and you might learn something in the process!

In this case, the BFG is not a big friendly giant, but a butterfly garden.  Come enjoy this beautify piece of property right in Cumberland Center. The edge of the field is actually part of the Town Forest; the rest is recently acquired land, purchased to square off some odd shaped parcels.  The future of some of this field is uncertain, but as of now, it is ours to enjoy.

There are several ways to get to the garden: either walk down the abandon railroad bed (entrance off of Tuttle Rd at the yellow gate); or walk down the Town Forest Trail.  Cut over to the abandon railroad bed at M3, M4 or if you want to cut through the woods, the old snowmobile trail at M7.  The town periodically mows around the edge of the field; so after enjoying the view, you can continue on. If you continue around the field, pass the BFG, there is a significant vernal pool between the fence and the "live" railroad tracks.  In the spring, it can be very noisy. If you circle around the field and get back on the Town Forest Trail, there are a few more caches to be found.  There is also a Story Board trail for kids (check the map at the kiosk).

Beside birds and butterflies (and bees) deer and turkey have been seen in the field.  There are also ticks! Remember to wear blaze orange during hunting season. (Note: The garden and some small trees in the winter/fall are surrounded by orange snow fencing - this is to protect them from snowmobilers).

The cache contains some trinkets for kids, a few small books used to identify winter trees and animal tracks and what have you.  These are for the taking or just a quick look-see.  There is a laminated butterfly identification card for the first to find and a travel bug that really would like to get out to Irvine California - any way possible.   There is no need to go into the garden (unless you have an overwhelming urge to weed). The cache is winter friendly. Please return the cache exactly as you found it.
