#7 Chrysler Treasures - The Card Players Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Episcodad: Missing. May have rolled down under the steps or been muggled (for the 4th time). This site has been problematic to say the least. The artwork (one of my favorites) has been taken down from display for now. Perhaps I'll place another Card Players cache when it comes back on display. Archiving it today.

Geocache Description:

Seventh in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. This painting may be seen in Gallery 205 at the museum.

Tricksters have lured a young man into a game of cards. As he leans forward to play what he thinks is the winning card, the woman behind him quietly steals his moneybag. In contrast to this scene, in the painting next to it on the right at the museum, "The Musical Group", the musicians (some of whom appear in both paintings) are seen working in harmony, united in their effort to create beautiful music. Originally created as companion pieces, these two ambitious scenes of everyday Italian life were rejoined only in 2010, when the Chrysler Museum acquired "The Card Players" and reunited it with "The Musical Group" which had been part of its collection since 1971.

Baroque artists loved to moralize about proper human behavior. Presenting opposing images of high life and low life, of harmony and discord, the two paintings by Boncori convey a broader message about the choices we must make between virtue and vice. Typically Bologneses in its emotional & formal restraint, "The Musical Group" brings to mind elegant images of aristocratic music makers. Uniformly graceful and composed, the performers appear united in their effort to create beautiful music, the harmony of their concert serving as a symbol of their own emotional concord. "The Card Players" however presents us with a far less elevated gaming scene filled with discord and deceit, including pickpocketing and peeking at cards.

Giovanni Battista Boncori (1633–1699) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Born in Abruzzo, he first studied in Lombardy, then traveled to Parma, Venice, Florence & Bologna, before settling in Rome where he became Rector (1679), then Principe (1698) of the Academia di San Luca.
