The Susquehanna River is part of the Atlantic Flyway, a heavily used migration corridor for raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds. The water and forests of the gorge provide food and rest for migrating birds in the spring and fall. On the northern end of the gorge, Conejohela Flats is a major migration stopover and has been named:
Conejohela Roosting Birds - 792
Migratory Bird Stop - 861
Audubon Important Bird Area - 815
The Bird Inn - 776

There are several trenches (known as "deeps") located along the eastern side of the river. Geologists theorize that the "deeps" were formed when glaciers jammed in the river causing the flow to erode the east side. The deepest "deep" is _____ feet below the river surface and _____ feet below sea level.
