Geocache Description:

If you are a regular traveller along this road you've probably driven past here many times and may not have even noticed this object. Some tidying up along here means there is now plenty of room to stop .

According to Wikipedia, the first settlement in this area was in 1863 when the Dome Pass Accommodation House was built on the road opposite this cache site.  It was a popular stopping place for waggoners from Invercargill and Dunedin.

This cairn commemorates the deaths of 4 people buried nearby (apparently closer to the river in front of the stand of trees - see here)

In 1964 or 1866, Miss Margaret Smith was drowned in either Fryers Creek or the Matarua River near Parawa when the coach/waggon she was travelling in overturned.

In 1871, James Cannon (or Cameron) died after eating tutu berries which he claimed were not poisonous.  (Maori’s did make beer, wine and a pudding from the berries, being very careful to strain the toxic seeds and to eat/drink in moderation.)

In 1911, Charles Heron was found dead in his bed.  The 35 year old was a cook at the Glenquoich station and it was presumed he died from injuries after a fight with a shearer.

The third man was a miner found dead in his hut at the Nokomai diggings.

In 1934 this cairn was erected.  £5 was granted by the Southland County Council with another £5 from the Farmers Union.  Local residents funded the remaining cost.

"It is proposed to surround the graves with a border of large stones which will be painted white, and the committee are of the opinion that this is all that necessary, as no gain would result from the expense of fencing or conveying the area to the Council. It seems to me also that this arrangement should be satisfactory to everyone concerned."

The niche originally held a drawer with a book on the history of the area and a visitor’s book.

You know what to do - don't leave elephant tracks, replace the cache and camo as found and CITO as you go.
