Geocache Description:

This is one of three geocaches placed in the Hess Knob area of the Ozark National Forest, near an unusual rock formation called the Arkansas Sphinx. Access to these caches is from County Road 4840 (Pilot Rock Mountain Road). Parking and trailhead waypoints are provided below.

The Arkansas Sphinx is the Ozark rendition of the Egypt’s Great Sphinx, courtesy of Mother Nature.

The trail is very steep all the way from the trailhead to the Sphinx -- straight up a mountain -- so be prepared for a hard hike. But on the positive side, it is a short one, as the distance from the trailhead to the Sphinx is only about 700 feet. And the reward for the hike is well worth it!

The cache is a cammo painted peanut butter jar which will hold small trade items. It will not be difficult to find, as the main reason for it being placed here is to bring geocachers to this scenic area. But PLEASE replace and cover up the cache as you find it (or even better). This area around the hiding spot is steep and, while the cache is secure now, I would hate for it to disappear down the mountain due to someone not taking care in rehiding it and making sure it was secure before they left!

Hidden with permit approved by the Ozark National Forest,
Big Piney Ranger District. (Permit # 08100318-02)
