The Cambus Wallace was shipwrecked near Jumpinpin in 1894. The ship's cargo contained large quantities of dynamite which was later ignited, with the explosion causing the formation of a large crater in the sand dunes which eventually filled with fresh water from the island’s water table to become Clayton’s Lake. The lake is often filled during wet weather to this day.
