Seven Hot Springs of Atami 大湯間歇泉 Traditional Cache

Of the many hot springs found from ancient times, the Seven Hot Springs of Atami hold important roles in the history of Atami Onsen.

Oh Yu Hot Spring has been a world-famous geyser since ancient times. It is said that in the past, Oh Yu alternately gushed out hot water and steam six times a day, shaking the earth with its vigorous blasts. During the latter half of the Meiji era, this action gradually decrease and finally stopped, but after the Great Kanto Earthquake, Oh Yu became active once again. Its activity, however, continued to decrease until it finally stopped at the beginning of the Showa era.

In 1962, an effort was made to artificially start the geyser’s action, and it is presently maintained as a cultural monument of the city.

熱海七湯の一つ「大湯間歇泉」は、古くからの間歇泉で世界的にも有名な自噴泉でありました。
「大湯」の噴出は昼夜6回あり、湯と蒸気を交互に激しい勢いで吹き出し、地面が揺れるようであったといいます。
明治中頃から次第に減少し1923年に止まってしまいましたが、関東大震災の時に再び噴出しました。しかし、その後も噴出回数は減少しつづけ、昭和のはじめに止まってしまいました。

1962年に、人工的に噴出する間歇泉として整備され、市の文化財として保存し、現在に至っています。
