Die heute noch bestehende älteste Sozialsiedlung der Welt wurde 1521 von Jakob Fugger für schuldlos verarmte Augsburger Bürger gestiftet und von 1514 bis 1523 erbaut. Sie besteht aus 67 Häusern mit 140 Wohnungen, einer Kirche und Verwaltungsgebäuden. Immer noch beträgt die Jahresmiete nur 0,88 Euro (früher ein Rheinischer Gulden). Drei Gebete täglich für das Seelenheil der Stifterfamilie sind Bestandteil des Mietvertrags.
Als "Stadt in der Stadt" wird die Fuggerei bezeichnet, denn sie hat eine Kirche, eine Stadtmauer und drei Toren. Bis heute wird die Sozialsiedlung nahezu ausschließlich aus dem Stiftungsvermögen (Forstwirtschaft und Immobilien) finanziert und durch die Fürstlich und Gräflich Fuggersche Stiftungs-Administration verwaltet.
Besucher können das Wohnen früherer Zeiten in drei Räumen des letzten original erhaltenen Haus nachvollziehen. Auch eine aktuelle Wohnung kann besichtigt werden. Der im Jahr 2006 neu eröffnete, moderne didaktische Bereich des Fuggereimuseums dokumentiert mit einem Museumsfilm, mit Text- und Bildtafeln sowie Exponaten die Geschichte der Fugger und der Fuggerei.
Die letzten 6 Original erhaltenen Gaslaternen in Augsburg werden in der Fuggerei immer noch mit Gas betrieben. 1977 wurden bis auf diese 6 Riedinger Gaslaternen alle Gaslaternen in Augsburg abgebaut.

The picturesque settlement has its roots in the 16th century and goes back to a foundation of the famous merchant Jakob Fugger.
The still existing oldest social settlement in the world was founded in 1521 by Jakob Fugger for innocently impoverished Augsburg citizens and built from 1514 to 1523. It consists of 67 houses with 140 apartments, a church and administrative buildings. The annual rent is still only 0.88 euros (formerly a Rhenish guilder). Three prayers daily for the salvation of the founding family are part of the lease.
A "city in the city" is the Fuggerei, because it has a church, a city wall and three gates. To date, the housing estate is financed almost exclusively by the Foundations assets (forestry and real estate) and managed by the Princely and Count Fuggersche Foundation Administration.
Visitors can reconstruct the living of former times in three rooms of the last original preserved house. Also a current apartment can be visited. Newly opened in 2006, the modern didactic area of the Fuggerum Museum documents the history of the Fuggers and the Fuggerei with a museum film, text and image panels and exhibits.
The last 6 original preserved gas lanterns in Augsburg are still operated by gas in the Fuggerei. In 1977 all gas lanterns in Augsburg were dismantled except for these 6 Riedinger gas lanterns.
These were preserved - the last of their kind at the original location.
And really worth seeing is the bunker of the Fuggerei with its exhibition!
