Bring a stepladder. Welcome to Raglan Cottage aka The Honey Shack. Somewhere in the vicinity of this historical building is a Small-sized box. It contains a log, some swag, and a pencil. You can park in the service road nearby, and there's a bus stop too.
Raglan Cottage was built in 1850. The original part of the building is made from bluestone blocks and handmade red bricks. The timber front is a later extension. Nowadays Raglan Cottage is owned by the City of Melton. In 1980 the city paid for a renovation which changed the interior to bring it up to date for use as a modern community building.
According to the Shire of Melton Heritage Study Vol. 4:
“It is also historically significant as a gold-era wayside facility, either a shop in its own right, or (likely) for its association with the former Lord Raglan Hotel ('The Raglan'), now demolished, which was Melton's second hotel and a major coach staging point, with large stables to accommodate the teams....this place would appear to constitute the only remaining evidence of Melton's development as a wayside service town, originally en route to the Ballarat and Blackwood goldfields, and lasting until the opening of the direct Melbourne to Ballarat railway in 1889.”
Other nearby historical buildings include the Mechanics' Institute across the street about 110 metres to the west, and at The Willows historical park about 330 metres to the south.
