Porta Genova - Il Dazio
Porta Genova è una delle cinque porte più recenti di Milano: fu ricavata aprendo un varco nei Bastioni per consentire un’agevole comunicazione diretta fra la città e la nuova stazione di Porta Ticinese (oggi Porta Genova), inaugurata nel 1870. Posta a sud-ovest della città, conserva i caselli daziari progettati dal Nazari, realizzati in stile eclettico fra il 1873 e il 1876, e collocati al centro del vasto piazzale che oggi porta il nome di Piazzale Cantore. I due caselli del dazio non hanno un grande valore storico e neppure artistico; inoltre uno dei due deve aver avuto problemi di staticità, visto che è leggermente deforme.
Di rilevante la piazza offre la Casa Reininghaus, un bellissimo edificio eclettico e il palazzo scolastico Emilio De Magisteris.
Oltre alla casa, la piazza è stata protagonista anche di una vera première, come il primo cinema milanese.
Infatti nel 1897 all’angolo tra Piazza Cantore e Via Cicco Simonetta, debuttò il primo e improvvisato cinematografo milanese, denominato “Casino di Meneghino e Cecca della Reale Cinematografica”, che ebbe vita molto breve. Il nome fa riferimento alle due principali maschere milanesi della commedia dell’arte. Si trattava di un piccolo edificio munito di torretta panoramica fatto costruire in occasione della Fiera di Porta Genova da Italo Pacchioni, un gestore che proiettava scene riprese con un’attrezzatura da lui stesso realizzata.
Riguardo la Casa Reininghaus, nel 1898 venne costruito, su progetto dell’architetto Sebastiano Locati, un grande edificio multifunzione di sei piani il cui nome deriva dal proprietario, un produttore di birra austriaco.
La casa comprendeva il Teatro Birraria Stabilini, café-chantant strutturato su tre piani di proprietà di Emilio Suvini e Luigi Zerboni.
L’imponente edificio ospitava anche negozi, un ristorante e una sala da biliardo al piano ammezzato, nonché abitazioni ai piani superiori. Purtroppo l’elegante palazzo venne rovinato negli anni Trenta/Quaranta da un sopralzo di due piani alquanto discutibile e sgraziato.

Porta Genova is one of the five most recent gates of Milan: it was created by opening a gate in the Bastions to allow an easy direct communication between the city and the new Porta Ticinese station (today Porta Genova), inaugurated in 1870. west of the city, it keeps the tollhouses designed by Nazari, made in an eclectic style between 1873 and 1876, and placed in the center of the vast square that today bears the name of Piazzale Cantore. The two toll booths do not have great historical or even artistic value; moreover one of the two must have had static problems, since it is slightly deformed.
Of relevance the square offers the Casa Reininghaus, a beautiful eclectic building and the school building Emilio De Magisteris.
In addition to the house, the square was also the protagonist of a real première, like the first Milanese cinema.
In fact, in 1897 on the corner between Piazza Cantore and Via Cicco Simonetta, the first and improvised Milanese cinema debuted, called "Casino di Meneghino and Cecca della Reale Cinematografica", which had a very short life. The name refers to the two main Milanese masks of the commedia dell'arte. It was a small building with a panoramic turret built for the Fiera di Porta Genova by Italo Pacchioni, a manager who projected scenes shot with a piece of equipment he made himself.
Regarding the Reininghaus House, in 1898 a large six-storey multi-purpose building was built, designed by the architect Sebastiano Locati, whose name derives from the owner, an Austrian beer producer.
The house included the Stabilini Brewery, café-chantant structured on three floors owned by Emilio Suvini and Luigi Zerboni.
The imposing building also housed shops, a restaurant and a billiard room on the mezzanine floor, as well as houses on the upper floors. Unfortunately, the elegant building was ruined in the thirties / forties by a somewhat objectionable and ungracious two storey extension.
