Geocache Description:

My second hide and also in a park in Canterbury. Many people mistake Canterbury racecourse for Canterbury Park but this park is actually Canterbury Park. The cache is close to a shady path and a memorial for James Slocombe.

James Slocombe was born in 1844 and died on the 17th January 1894. He was a postmaster and storekeeper on Canterbury Rd where he also operated a bakery. The memorial used to be a drinking fountain but was damaged beyond repair by a lightning strike in 1968. It was described as a four-sided sandstone structure about 5 feet tall. It was then replaced by a concrete wall on which the tablets from the original monument were fixed.

The cache is a small clear container with a green lid in a zip lock bag. It is located just a bit off the path on the opposite side to the memorial. It contains a small logbook, a pencil, a travel bug and some swag. It can only fit very small swag as the container is quite small. You may need a stick but there are plenty all around. Please replace all camo as found. Have fun and happy caching!
